Samsung Retaliates, Sues Apple for Patent Infringement

On April 21, 2011 Samsung Electronics Co. filed patent lawsuits against Apple for its iPhone and iPad devices in apparent retaliation over Apple’s own suit against Samsung.  Samsung filed a lawsuit in the Seoul Central District Court, Korea against Apple Inc. citing five patent infringements. Separately, Samsung filed a suit in a court in Tokyo, Japan citing two patent infringements, and in Manheim, Germany citing three patent infringements.

Samsung said the suits involved alleged infringements of patents mainly involving power reduction during data transmission, 3G technology for reducing errors during data transmission, and wireless data communication technology.

Samsung said it is responding actively to the legal action taken against it in order to protect its intellectual property and to ensure its continued innovation and growth in the mobile communications business.

Apple earlier filed a lawsuit against Samsung for alleged violation of its patents and trademarks over the iPhone and iPad.  Apple claims that Samsung slavishly copied its iPhone and iPad designs.

Apple’s earlier suit and Samsung’s countersuit has surprised many as both companies are engaged in business dealings, with Samsung producing chips and displays for Apple.  It is not unknown that Apple is the second-biggest client of Samsung and is expected to become its biggest client this year.

Apple’s aggressive move is most likely its answer to the growing popularity of Google’s Android operating system.

  1. If I were Samsung I’ll cancel all chips and display order of Apple so that they (Apple) will not have products to sell. Hehehehehe

  2. Also remember that a patent infringement law suite can be a David-versus-Goliath confrontation. Defendants in patent infringement lawsuits are usually large corporations with unlimited resources, while plaintiffs in patent infringement lawsuits are often individuals or small businesses with very limited resources.
