Google to Release Quad-Core Android 2.4 Ice Cream Sandwich Phone by End of 2011?

Google will most likely release a quad-core Android 2.4 Ice Cream Sandwich Nexus phone by end of 2011.  This appears to be the case after Nvidia confirmed during its first quarter earnings call that its next-gen Tegra chip would power new Ice Cream Sandwich devices.

It was revealed by Jen-Hsun Huang, CEO of Nvidia, that the company is working closely with Google on the delivery of new products based on Ice Cream Sandwich Android update.  And we all learned at the Google I/O event that the Android 2.4 Ice Cream Sandwich will be released by the end of the 2011.

“We’re really excited about the work that they’re doing on Ice Cream. And I can’t comment too much more other than that, but we’re working very closely with their teams on the Ice Cream Sandwich,” the CEO was quoted saying.  “And as all of these products – they will come to the market when they’re great, and I’m certainly expecting them to be great on this year.”

Nvidia’s Quad-core processor is called Tegra 3 and it has already been showcased as early as January of this year.  Nvidia seems to be ahead of the pack, with Jen-Hsun Huang claiming that his company has left others behind in terms of mobile quad-core technology.

“We’re working very closely with Google on Ice Cream Sandwich, and it’s a very important new generation of operating system based on starting from the Honeycomb base and I’m expecting it to be really terrific,” the Nvidia CEO said.

“And so we’re working very closely with the Google team, and Tegra will be surely be wonderful for Ice Cream when it comes.”

The dual-core phones have just been released and they are already talking quad-core?  I was planning on getting a dual-core upgrade but this made me re-think my plan.
