Microsoft to Use Facebook Users’ Data to Improve Bing Search

Microsoft will soon be able to use Facebook users’ data to improve Bing’s search results.  According to reports, Microsoft and Facebook have recently entered into such agreement. This move is perceived as an answer by Bing to Google’s dominance in the search engine market.

Google uses date from users’ online social circles to get relevant results, and Microsoft is attempting to do the same with the recent tie up with Facebook.  Google looks for social data in any manner it can but with Microsoft’s agreement with Facebook, it has an instant access to the biggest source of social information.  Facebook now has more than 600 million members.

Microsoft says this tie up with Facebook will give it a competitive advantage over Google.  I can certainly see how it can be a big advantage.

Facebook, on its part, says that the arrangement is limited only to Microsoft’s Bing at the moment.  We are not discussing this specific kind of partnership with other search engines at this time, but we are open to having those discussions with them,” Facebook’s spokesperson said.

Bing is expected to use the “likes” that users make through Facebook and in other sites that has this feature.   Bing users will soon see whether their Facebook friends liked the results churned out by their search queries.  This is actually not very different from Google +1.

  1. Microsoft sure seems desperate to get in the internet game. First, they buy Skype. Now, they’re working with Facebook!

If they keep trying to copy Google, they’re not going to get very far.
