Nintendo Wii U Specs, Features, Photos, Release Date

 

At the recently held E3 Expo, Nintendo introduced the Wii U, the successor to the highly successful Wii game console. The Wii U includes a new controller with a 6.2-inch touch screen.  It’s augmented reality system makes direct interaction between the touchscreen and the television possible, although the controller is not a separate handheld gaming device.  In addition to the 6.2-inch screen, the new controller also features an accelerometer and a gyroscope, a rumble feature, an inward-facing camera, a microphone and speakers.  Adding these features to the Classic Controller button scheme – two analog Circle Pads, +Control Pad, A/B/X/Y buttons, L/R buttons and ZL/ZR buttons.

Wii U combines motion-sensing game play and supports 1080p HD graphics via HDMI.  It’s also compatible with component, S-video and composite cables.  The Wii U will have internal flash memory which will be expandable via an SD card or external USB HDD. Processor is courtesy of IBM.  The device will have four USB 2.0 slots and game media will be via high-density optical discs which will hold up to 25GB of data.  Graphics is said to be courtesy of an AMD Radeon HD GPU.

Each Wii U console comes with the new controller and can also use up to four additional Wii Remote or Wii Remote Plus controllers. The system is backward compatible and can play all Wii games and use all Wii accessories.  The Wii U will be available “sometime in 2012”.  Price has not yet been revealed.
