Google Introduces Voice Search, Search by Image and Instant Pages

The number one search engine gets better with the introduction of new cutting edge features. Google just announced that it is bringing speech recognition and computer vision technology to the desktop, and the next step for Google Instant — Instant Pages.

Google Voice Search

This feature has been available on Android for some time now and Google is bringing the same cool James Bond feature to our desktops. Just say what you want Google to search and it recognizes your voice and renders results just as if you have entered the text manually. This has been a nifty feature on the Android as devices are sometimes too small for typing.

The Google Voice Search will be available on Chrome. If you’re using Chrome, expect to see a little microphone in your Google search box. Click the microphone and can speak to start your search. Voice Search on desktop is rolling out in English at the moment.

Search By Image

Again, Google started image search on Android via the Google Goggles app where you only need to snap a photo of the thing you want to search about. Almost instantly, Google churns out search results about the photo you took. Now Google is bringing this to desktop search. You’ll start seeing a little camera for the new Search by Image feature. If you click the camera, you can upload any picture or plug in an image URL from the web and ask Google to search information about it. Search by Image is rolling out now globally in 40 languages. Google is also releasing Chrome and Firefox extensions that enable you to search any image on the web by right-clicking.

Instant Pages

The next update introduced by Google is Instant Pages, the next step for Google Instant. Last year Google introduced Google Instant, which renders search results while you type.

Instant Pages can get the top search result ready in the background while you’re choosing which link to click, saving you two to five seconds on typical searches. As you make your decision on which result to use in a search, Google is already prerendering the top search result so the page loads instantly as soon as you click on it.  To use Instant Pages, get the next beta release of Chrome which includes prerendering.
