Google’s Swiffy Converts Flash to HTML5

One of the downsides to owning an Apple device is not having the ability to run Flash videos and animation.  Apple does not support the format and it has refused to heed consumers’ requests citing the poor effect of Flash files on the performance of its devices.

If you want to play Flash on your Apple devices, Google has a solution.  Its program called “Swiffy” converts Flash to HTML5, a format that is supported by Apple devices.   The output runs on modern browsers such as Chrome and Safari but Google claims that Swiffy is still in its early version and won’t convert all Flash content yet but already converts ads and animations.

“Some Google projects really do start from one person hacking around. Last summer, an engineering intern named Pieter Senster joined the mobile advertising team to explore how we could display Flash animations on devices that don’t support Adobe Flash player. Pieter made such great progress that Google hired him full time and formed a team to work on the project. Swiffy was born!”.  This is a statement from product manager Marcel Gordon.

The first version of Swiffy is already available on Google Labs.  You can upload a SWF file, and Swiffy will produce an HTML5 version.
