MMDA Launches Internet-Based “Metro Manila Traffic Navigator”

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) recently launched the Metro Manila Traffic Navigator, an internet-based navigation system meant for commuters and motorists who want real-time traffic updates.  The system relies on the MMDA’s closed circuit televisions (CCTVs) to get the traffic situation in an area. It will get support from reports sent in by traffic enforcers in the field, especially in areas where there are no surveillance cameras.  The Navigator does not require Global Positioning System (GPS) for accurate data as users only need an Internet connection to access it.

The Navigator can be accessed through the MMDA website www.mmda.gov.ph or through TV5’s www.interaksyon.com but both sites will direct you to mmdatraffic.interaksyon.com.

Initially, the system will cover these areas:

  • Epifaniodelos Santos Avenue(EDSA) from Balintawak to Mall of Asia
  • C-5 road (from Market!Market! to Libis flyover)
  • South LuzonExpressway (from Nichols to Alabang Exit)
  • Roxas Boulevard(from Coastal Road toAnda Circle)
  • Quezon Avenue(from Philcoa toMayon Street)
  • España Avenue(from Welcome Rotunda to Lerma).

MMDA says it will soon be adding Ortigas Avenue, Commonwealth Avenue, and Marcos Highway, and possibly the city streets in the near future.

I tried the Navigator and I must say it’s quite fast.  If you go to the Navigator site you will have three view options: the System View, Line View and Google Map.

If you click on a specific area inside a particular view, a small window pops up which contains more details on that area’s traffic situation and has Facebook and Twitter buttons for sharing options.
