HP Abandons webOS, Will Discontinue TouchPad, Pre and Veer

HP is going to abandon webOS.  This shocking news has been recently announced by the electronics giant in a press release.   The statement from HP goes:

In addition, HP reported that it plans to announce that it will discontinue operations for webOS devices, specifically the TouchPad and webOS phones. HP will continue to explore options to optimize the value of webOS software going forward.

The news comes a surprise since HP invested US$1.2 billion to acquire webOS from Palm and it has not been that long since HP introduced webOS products, particularly the TouchPad tablet and the Pre and Veer handsets.  HP was even banking on the operating system to power a variety of products.   The OS had a lot of promise with its slick UI and better multi-tasking feature.  These products have yet to officially launch in the Philippines and now the news just made it clearer that we will never get to experience webOS.

Sadly, the TouchPad and the webOS handsets got a lukewarm reception from the public, which probably prompted the decision to abandon webOS operations.   Not even Manny Pacquiao’s commercials for the TouchPad and Veer could boost the sales of these devices.
