Globe Intros CloudFone Ice, a Budget Android Phone

Globe Telecom has officially announced the CloudFone Ice, its initial budget Android handset offering.  The CloudFone Ice sports a 3.2-inch touchscreen display (320×480 pixels) and runs Android 2.1 (Éclair).  Other specs of the CloudFone Ice include WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, 3G/HSDPA, Bluetooth, GPS, FM Radio and 3.15MP camera and up to 32GB storage via microSD card.  The CloudFone Ice is actually a re-branded Huawei U8500.

The CloudFone Ice is available for P4,990 on prepaid and is free at My Super Plan 499.  Globe Telecom says that the CloudFone Ice is only the first from the CloudFone range so let’s hope that Globe will offer more budget handsets in the future.

The question that naturally comes to mind is, is this Globe’s answer to the Smart Netphone 701? The CloudFone Ice is a lot cheaper but Smart’s Netphone has better specs and has the SmartNet ecosystem, so I guess this does not compete head on with the Netphone but is just a budget offering from Globe.   For the price of P4,990, the CloudFone Ice could be the cheapest Android handset in the market right now.
