Smart’s Next Netphone is the Samsung Galaxy Y

The Smart Netphone 701 has been only available for about a month in the market and practically just fresh from a media blitzkrieg.  Now Smart Communications has already taken the lid off the next Netphone, the Samsung Galaxy Y.  But unlike the Smart branded Netphone 701 which is actually a ZTE Blade handset, Smart chose to retain the Samsung branding and just affixed the Netphone name.  Hence, the next Netphone will be officially known as the Samsung Galaxy Y Netphone Edition.

How different is the Samsung Galaxy Y Netphone Edition from the current Netphone 701?  Apparently, they’re very different in terms of specs and pricing.  The Galaxy Y is somewhere in the budget smartphone category being priced at only P5990 for the prepaid kit.  On postpaid, it will be free on Data Lite Plan 500 and All-in Plan 800

Samsung Galaxy Y Netphone Edition Specifications

  • 3-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen display (240 x 320 pixels)
  • Android 2.3 Gingerbread with TouchWiz 3.0
  • 823MHz ARMv6 processor
  • 256MB RAM
  • 164MB internal storage, expandable up to 32GB via microSD
  • 3G/HSDPA 7.2 Mbps
  • Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP
  • WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
  • 2MP camera

  • Full Netphone capabilities

From this we have a pretty good idea of how Smart is planning to market the Netphone brand.  I was almost certain during the launch of Netphone 701 that Smart will retain the naming system and use Netphone 701 or 801 in the next Netphone.  It appears that Smart is going to retain the handset brand as long as it is known, like the Samsung Galaxy Y, and use the Smart Netphone name if the handset is from a relatively smaller brand.

The Samsung Galaxy Y Netphone Edition is currently under pre-order here.   Reservation period is is from October 1 to 14 2011.

Note:  Smart’s pre-order page states that the screen size of the Samsung Galaxy Y Netphone Edition is 2.8 inches but the official screen size from Samsung is 3 inches.
