Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus Hands-On, First Impressions

I recently received a Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus review unit.   The Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus is the update to the popular Samsung Galaxy Ace, a mid-range Android handset.  I’m going to post a full hands-on review soon but in the meantime, I’m sharing my first impressions. First, let’s look at the specs of the Galaxy Ace Plus.

The older Galaxy Ace had a 800MHz CPU, a 3.5-inch screen, 158MB of internal storage and a 278MB RAM.  The Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus is much better as it now gets a faster 1GHz processor, a 3GB internal memory,  512MB of RAM and a bigger 3.65-inch display although with the same 320 x 480 resolution.  The Galaxy Ace Plus still has a 5 megapixel camera and also runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread with TouchWiz on top.

The hardware design of the Galaxy Ace Plus is a bit different from that of the Galaxy Ace.  Although the front of the handset still retains most of the appearance of the older model, the silver trimming on the front’s outline is now more pronounced.  In fact at the top part, the silver outline overflows a bit and reveals more of the silver trimming.  And while the side part of the Galaxy Ace was mostly silver, it’s not the case with the Galaxy Ace Plus. When viewed from the side, the silver trimming is now thinner and occupies only upper part of the handset.

The design change is more obvious when it comes to the handset’s back cover.  The Galaxy Ace had a textured finish on the back cover while the Galaxy Ace Plus now has a glossy black finish.  The back part of the Galaxy Ace Plus is ow almost the same as the back part of the iPhone 3GS.

The screen of the Galaxy Ace Plus has improved from the older handset. Although it still sports the same resolution, its quality is much better.  What I remember from the display on the older Galaxy Ace is its poor viewing angles but this is no longer the case with the Galaxy Ace Plus.  Also, the newer handset now has better color reproduction compared to the older model.

The overall feel of the Galaxy Ace Plus is much better than its predecessor.  Whereas the Galaxy Ace felt like a toy in your hand, the Galaxy Ace Plus is a tad heavier and considerably sturdier.  The performance has also improved, thanks to the faster 1GHz processor and the bigger 512MB RAM.

I like the Galaxy Ace Plus so far but let’s see how it holds up in my full hands-on review.  Do watch out for that.
