Android Market Now Known as Google Play

The app store we have come to know as Android Market gets a makeover, a little shake-up and a brand-spanking-new name.  It is now known as Google Play and promises to offer a new digital content experience.  Google play now hosts music, movies, books, and Android apps and games.

The goal for Google Play is to bring together all content in one place that can be accessed across devices. It aims to be an all-in-one entertainment hub that can be accessed from the web, from an Android device or even TV.  Google is also simplifying access to digital content for Google users.   This is actually a move that highlights Google’s strategy to move into cloud service.

If you’re worried about what will happen to your existing account, Google says that all content and apps will remain in your account, but will simply transition to Google Play.  The Android Market app icon will also become the Google Play store icon.  For contents like movies, books and music apps, they’ll get their own names like “Play Music” and “Play Movies.”

Google is starting the rollout for Google Play today.  For web access, you can see the changes as early as now, but on devices, the rollout is gradual.  Play Music and Play Movies will of course only be available in countries where the services have already been launched by Google.

Google is currently promoting Google Play through its “Seven Days to Play” sale, offering apps, books, movies and music on discount.  Here’s a video about Google Play if you want to know more.
