Rumor: Google Nexus Tablet to Launch in July, Will Be Priced at $199

Rumors of a Google Nexus tablet have been around since March but it gotten stronger since.   The Verge is one of the sites that feed these rumors and if stories are to be believed, Google is now in collaboration with Asus for the design of the first ever Google Nexus tablet.  We have seen the Asus Eee Pad Memo ME370T being demoed at the Mobile World Congress.  It is a quad-core Tegra 3 Android tablet from Asus running Ice Cream Sandwich and priced at only $249. It looks like this Asus-branded tablet will be scrapped and in its place, Asus will be making the Google Nexus Tablet.  We should therefore expect a tablet with a similar design as the Asus Memo ME370T.

However, Google looks to be bent on bringing the price lower, so the hardware specs could be less impressive.  So instead of a quad-core CPU, we could be expecting a dual-core model.  The other rumored specs list include a 7-inch display, Wi-Fi only connectivity and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS.  The intent to lower the price could be a move to get Amazon’s market for the Kindle Fire which retails for $199.  It is said that the Google Nexus tablet will launch in July.  These are just rumors as of now so anything is still possible.  We could still expect a quad-core setup for instance.

Google’s approach to make a Nexus tablet is a step in the right direction.  It has been successful with this strategy in the smartphone arena, giving manufacturers a chance to collaborate, not to mention a model device to base their own products on.
