Samsung Galaxy S III Announced, Features 4.8-inch display, 1.4 GHZ Quad-core Processor, ICS

One of the most awaited handsets this year has finally been revealed to the public.  Samsung new flagship smartphone, and the newest Android superphone in the market, has finally been unveiled at Samsung’s Mobile Unpacked event.  The handset I’m talking about of course is the Samsung Galaxy S III, the follow-up to the wildly successful handset, the Samsung Galaxy S II.

So now a lot of rumors have been confirmed.  The name is just one of them.  The phone is called the Galaxy S III as many have anticipated but until the announcement, some believed the name could be different.   The screen size of 4.8-inch has also been confirmed.  The 1.4 GHz quad-core Exynos chip has already been confirmed a few days ago so this one is not a surprise.

In terms of design, the Samsung Galaxy S III looks like its Galaxy Nexus cousin.  Samsung has ditched the sharp edges of the Galaxy S II and opted this time for round edges.  The overall appeal is okay, but it seems like the HTC One X is better looking.  This is just of course a personal opinion.

For basic specs, the Samsung Galaxy S III weighs just 133 grams and comes in at 8.6mm thick.  Its 4.8-inch display features HD Super AMOLED screen with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution.  The 1.4 GHz quad-core Exynos chip gets help from a 1GB of RAM.  For shooters, the Galaxy S III offers an 8-megapixel rear shooter and a 1.9 megapixel front shooter.  The handset will feature HSPA+ but in certain countries, an LTE version will be released.  It will be available in 16 or 32GB storage configurations.  A 64GB version is in the works though.  There’s a microSD expansion, Bluetooth 4.0 support, GPS with GLONASS reception, 802.11n Wi-Fi, NFC, and 2,100mAh battery.  The handset will also be compatible with a separate C Pen stylus accessory.

Other features of the Samsung Galaxy S III include 990ms start-up time, 3.3fps burst mode and best-shot selection.  The Samsung Galaxy S III sets itself apart from other Ice Cream Sandwich phones with the TouchWiz UI.  The TouchWiz on the handset packs new customizations like gesture controls and pop-up play.

As to availability, Samsung has already announced that the handset will be available in Europe in May 29 and in the United States in June.  No word yet as to the availability in the Philippines but that will not take too long in my opinion.  We are always among the first to get handsets from Samsung.  There’s also no word yet on pricing.
