Adonit Jot Classic Stylus Pen Review

With the growing popularity of touchscreen devices like tablets and smartphones, the need for a stylus naturally grows as well.   Recent devices like the Samsung Galaxy Note have built in pen-input technology that makes its S Pen accessory very functional and effective.  For most touch screen devices, however, the hunt for a good stylus becomes frustrating.  There are a lot of stylus pens available in the market and most of them have rubber tips.  The problem with rubber tips is that, after quite some time, it becomes softer, and eventually it becomes difficult to use.  With rubber tips, precision is also a problem.   With games like Draw Something that needs precision strokes, there is a celar need for a highly responsive and a precise stylus pen.

Enter Adonit Jot stylus pens.  I’ve never heard of Adonit before, and I also never heard its Jot stylus pens – the Jot Classic, the Jot Mini and the Jot Pro.  I had the chance to use and review the Jot Classic.

So what sets the Jot Classic and the other Jot stylus pens from Adonit apart?  What makes theme different from other stylus pens available in the market today?  The unique feature of the Jot stylus pens is the precision disk.  It’s a thin and clear disk that is attached to the tip of the stylus pen.  It’s something novel and if you don’t know how the thing works, you’d actually think it’s a protection for the tip of the stylus and would be tempted to remove it and separate it from the stylus.   The tip of the stylus actually looks like a ballpen’s end, something that’s called a ball point.  It’s not the thing that touches the device’s screen.  The ballpoint tip acts like a joint, allowing the disk to become movable and therefore also allowing different writing angles.

Under the clear, thin precision disk, you’d see a silver cross, and it is possibly the thing that’s responsible for the precision writing.  The center of this cross is what is recognized by the screen, resulting in highly accurate strokes.   In terms of precision, the Adoint Jot Classic delivers very precise strokes, the most precise I’ve seen from a stylus pen.  Using the pen in Draw Something makes the game more enjoyable as you can make your sketches more accurate.  The precision disk also helps in giving the user control over strokes.  With a stylus as precise as the Adonit Jot Classic, making sketches even in small screens like the iPhone’s is not a problem.

In terms of overall design, the Adonit Jot Classic is one of the best-designed stylus pens I’ve seen.  It looks and feels like a ballpen, which is good since it comfortable to use.  It has a protective cap which of course protects the precision disk and which can be placed at the back of the stylus when the Jot is in use.

The build quality of the Jot Classic is top-notch.    It’s made of aluminium and steel, giving it the feel and appearance of a luxury pen.   When you hold the pen, you’ll never doubt the level of craftsmanship that went into the design and creation of the pen.  This, of course, is a welcome bonus since you already get the level of precision you want from a stylus.

My only gripe? It’s very minor, actually.  The Jot Classic creates a sound when the precision disk touches your device’s screen.  It can be startling at the beginning but it actually doesn’t do any harm to your device.  It’s just how the stylus works.

The Adonit Jot Classic retails for Php950.  It is available in turquoise, green, purple and red colors.

It is compatible with all capacitive touch screens and will therefore work with iPads, iPhones, MacBook Trackpads, Magic Trackpads, and devices from HTC, Samsung, Nokia Motorola and Blackberry.

  1. Kindle fire stylus pens, or stylii if you prefer, help eliminate fat finger errors, keep your screen free from smudges and fingerprints and enable you to keep your gloves on during those chilly winter months. A stylus for Kindle Fire tablet computers looks just like a regular pen but with a soft spongy capacitive tip which mimics the electrical output of your fingers tricking a touchscreen Kindle Tablet into thinking you touched it with your skin but without the finger smudges.
