The packaging of Westone 2 immediately tells you that it’s a premium product. From the print on the box to the way the earphones itself is arranged, all the way to the quality of every article that goes with the product, you will notice the level of attention given by the makers of Westone 2.

Tearing the box open will reveal the earphones, a few sets of eartips, and a carrying pouch.  The pouch is a welcome addition. Most earphones do not go with carrying pouches, making it hard to carry them around. It’s simply not ideal to place earphones inside a bag or on pockets without the protection of a carrying pouch. Earphone wires are prone to tangles, leading to the wires being accidentally pulled. However sturdily built earphones are, when the wires are pulled hard enough, they tend to get pulled from the earbuds, making them useless. Westone got one right from the very start with the inclusion of a carrying pouch.

Two things immediately stand out with the Westone 2 earphones – the earbuds and the wires.  The earbuds do not have the standard design as I have previously mentioned. Each earbud is bean-shaped, with the wire connected at the right side. The other side is where the sound comes out, and naturally where the replaceable plastic or foam tips go. The earbuds have a glossy black finish and on the surface is the number 2 in blue print, which is about the only color accent the earphones have.

The Westone 2 is supposed to be worn with the bean-shaped earbuds pointing upwards and the wires looping from front to the back of the earlobes.  When the use instructions are followed to the letter, the Westone 2 is indeed comfortable to use, and even during sudden movements, the earbuds stay in place. The bean-shaped buds rest confortable on the back of the inner lobe.  If you’re one who doesn’t like wearing wires that need to be looped behind your earlobes, you can still wear it with the wires simply hanging down the normal way.  When the right pair of replaceable eartips is used and the fit is just right, you don’t need to wear the Westone 2 with the wires looped.

The wires of the Westone 2 are twisted or woven. This I found to be quite useful for two reasons – the wires are sturdier when woven, and they don’t get tangled easily. When they do get tangled, it’s quite easy to untangle.

When it  comes to sound performance, the Westone 2 simply delivers. This earphones’ sound is rounded, with the low to mid frequencies getting the spotlight on most audio tracks. The mids on the Westone 2 are clearly delivered, with just enough combination of warmth and softness that’s perfect for listening to tracks heavy on vocals.  The lows on the Westone 2 is also a winner in my opinion. The bass gives tracks just the right amount of oomph and power, never going short on texture. The combination of good mids and excellent base to me is enough to give these pair of earphones a good rating. This pair of earphones is excellent for almost any kind of track, but mostly it will shine in rock and alternative tracks, or vocals-heavy tunes. Listen, for instance, to Arcade Fire’s Suburban War that has the right mix of elements to test the quality of Westone 2, and you’ll know what I mean. Try popping in any track from Adele as well and you’ll be treated to a good audio performance by this pair of earphones.

The high frequencies are fine, if you may ask, but it’s not where the Westone 2 shines. It’s not it’s best element but it’s not that bad either. Combined with the great mids and bass, the highs blend well and do not make the listening experience anything less enjoyable. The soundstage is not ba either. It’s actually good to a certain extent but again, it’s not perfect. Being an in-ear earphones, the Westone 2 has excellent sound isolation. If you need to focus on a track and drown out the noise around you, the Westone 2 will not disappoint you.

Overall, the Westone 2 is an excellent pair of earphones, with just the right combination of good design and an equally good audio performance. If you love listening to rock or alternative tracks, this is the perfect pair of earphones. It will also play bass heavy tracks nicely.
