Apple Launches iTunes Store in the Philippines, other Asian Countries

Apple just announced that it launched the iTunes Store in the Philippines and other Asian countries including Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.

Although The App Store has been available to Filipinos for quite some time now, iTunes was previously unavailable in the country.   This is bad news for local online music stores which catered to music downloaders in the absence of iTunes.

The iTunes Store will feature a selection of local and international music from all the major labels and also from independent labels.  There are reportedly over 20 million songs in the iTunes Store to choose from.  Customers can also rent or purchase movies from the iTunes Store, with many available in HD, from major studios including 20th Century Fox, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, The Walt Disney Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures.

The iTunes Store can be accessed of course through the iPhone, iPad, iPod, Mac and PC devices.   All music on the iTunes Store comes in iTunes Plus, Apple’s DRM-free format with 256 kbps AAC encoding.

With Apple’s iTunes in the Cloud, music previously purchased through iTunes can be downloaded to all iOS devices at no additional cost, and new music purchases can be downloaded automatically to all devices.  If you have music you did not purchase from iTunes Store, you can use iTunes Match which stores your entire music library in iCloud for access from any iOS device.  iTunes Match is also now available for purchase in the Philippines.

iTunes Store purchases require a valid credit card with a Philippine billing address.

  1. They should offer other payment services like debit/prepaid cards! Not all people have credit cards.

Yes… Filipinos rather choose 5 6 people and not the credit card companies… And we are used to choose prepaid than postpaids. I do hope that apple will do something about this… Filipinos are big fans of apple.
