After months of speculation, the Google Nexus 7 tablet has been proven to be real. Google just took the lid off the Nexus 7 tablet, the first device to showcase the newest version of Android called Jelly Bean.
The Google Nexus 7 is made by Asus and will retail for as low as $199, about the same price as the Amazon Kindle Fire. The difference is, the Nexus 7 offers way better hardware and specs. The Nexus 7 has a 7-inch 1280 x 800 high-definition display and will run on a quad-core Tegra 3 processor. The rest of the specs include a GeForce 12-core GPU, a 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera, integrated NFC and 1GB of RAM. Google claims that the battery on the Nexus 7 lasts up to 9 hours on video playback. That’s quite impressive.
Google says that the Nexus 7 is made for Google Play. As such, Google Play store content gets highlighted and Google even introduced a recommendations engine and custom recommendation widgets. This is quite similar to the strategy done by Amazon with its Kindle Fire tablet. Google also revealed that the Nexus 7 will be the first device to ship with a mobile version the Chrome web browser. It will also feature the latest version of Google Maps which now can be used offline.
The 8GB Google Nexus 7 tablet retails for $199 while the 16GB version is priced at $249. It will come in black and white colors. It’s now available on preorder and will ship in July in the U.S., Canada and Australia.
