Apple Working on an iPad Mini According to Sources

On the day the Nexus 7 tablet from Google is officially released to the public, the New York Times somehow confirmed the iPad Mini.  This is the third publication to have released a report on the rumored Apple tablet, the other two being Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal.

According to the New York Times, “several people with knowledge of the project” has confirmed that Appleis developing a new tablet with a 7.85-inch screen and will sell for significantly less than the new iPad.  “Significantly less” has been rumored to be within the $250 range according to several articles.

There are no clear details about the iPad Mini at this point and not even the name is confirmed.  Apple’s people have not denied the project according to New York Times, which could mean that it is indeed working on it.  What New York Times mentioned is that the new tablet will be announced this year.

The fact that information was released to The New York Times on the day the shipping of the Google Nexus 7 tablet starts could be strategically planned by Apple to dampen interest on the Android tablet which has so far received glowing reviews.  With its features and cheap $199 price point, the Nexus 7 is definitely the tablet to beat in the 7-inch category.  Apple releasing an iPad Mini within the $250 range is definitely going to lessen interest in the Nexus 7.  But until the Mini is confirmed, the Nexus 7 continues to be the star.

Steve Jobs went on record to say that Apple will not be releasing a tablet smaller than the iPad’s 9.7-inch size.  It looks like Apple has changed its position and now wants to strengthen its position as the number one tablet maker.  It better hurry or Google could snatch the title the way it did in the smartphone market.

  1. Yeah, I also heard about. I think Apple is now seeking to produce a product which could compete with Android’s cheap and affordable tablets. I expects a lot from the Apple this time.
