Microsoft Launches Outlook.com, a New Email Service

There used to be a time when Hotmail was the most popular email service.  Now I don’t know if there’s anyone from my circle who still uses Hotmail.  It has since been overtaken by Gmail and Yahoo! Mail, and Microsoft thought it should do something about the situation.

To possibly get away from the bad reputation of Hotmail, Microsoft thought it wise to launch a completely new email service.  That new email service is called Outlook.com, and it is many things Hotmail is not.  It’s still free to use, but it has a way cleaner UI and ads are not as prominent.  I have tried to register on Outlook.com and so far I like what I see.  It is fresh and clean and the UI is consistent with Windows 8 and Metro design elements.

What Outlook.com offers is tight integration with Facebook and Twitter, with built in messaging feature, and an option to forward all your emails from other accounts to Outlook.com for better email management.  Storage is said to be unlimited and if you sign up, you get 7GB of free Skydrive storage.  Skype integration is also in the pipeline and will be offered soon.  This would compete with Hangouts in Gmail.  There’s a mobile version of Outlook.com available for users on Windows Phone, iOS and Android.

Outlook.com is now open to the public and signing up is free.   You can create a new account or sign in using an existing Hotmail address.  Give it a spin and share your impressions in the comments section.
