Samsung Galaxy Note II Now Official: 5.5-inch Display, 1.6GHz Quad-Core CPU

Just as rumored, Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy Note II phone-tablet or “phablet”.  Samsung pretty much created this category when the original Galaxy Note was released last year.  The original version sold more than 10 million units to date and the successor is expected to perform just as well or even better.

The leaks and rumors going into the official announcement by Samsung have been mostly right, so it appears that Samsung is not as good as Apple when it comes to hiding secrets.  The main specs of the Samsung Galaxy Note II are just as expected, including the bigger 5.5-inch display and quad-core processor.  The display is not that different from the original Galaxy Note since it is also of the HD Super AMOLED variant.  The resolution is not that different either.  The original Note had a 1280×800 display while the new Note has a 1280×720 resolution display.

The S Pen stylus, a key feature of the Galaxy Note series, has been improved by Samsung. It now has a rubber tip and the grip has been enhanced.  The pen is a bit larger and the digitizer is said to support 1,024 levels of pressure sensitivity.  This is four times than the original.

The hardware specs are impressive and it’s obvious that Samsung wants to keep its position as a leader in this segment which, over the past few months, has seen a new entry from maker LG with its Optimus Vu, and HTC is even rumoured to be working on a phablet. So how does 1.6 GHz quad-core Exynos processor, 2 GB of RAM, 3100 mAh battery, 8-megapixel rear camera, 1.9-megapixel front camera, 16, 32 or 64GB storage, and microSD slot sound? This list of specs is drool-worthy and the Galaxy Note II has it all.

The Galaxy Note II will launch with Jelly Bean and there’s the usual TouchWiz skin we see in Samsung handsets.  In terms of design, the Galaxy Note II shares the same elements as the Galaxy S III.  In fact The Note II is like an oversized Galaxy S III.

As to pricing, Samsung is still mum but thankfully, it has already revealed details on availability.  The Galaxy Note II will go on sale in European, Asian and Middle Eastern markets in October.  So I guess the Philippines is included in the October availability.
