Ainol Novo 7 Crystal Runs Jelly Bean, Costs Only $139

Ainol tablets are attractive because it has a good balance of features and price and it’s not too shabby in the build department.  When the Google Nexus 7 tablet came out, I thought it spelled doom for tablets like Ainol’s Novo 7 Aurora since the Nexus 7 is so aggressively priced it seems no longer practical to get an Ainol tablet.

Ainol apparently doesn’t want to easily go down without putting up a good fight.  The Chinese tablet manufacturer is going to start offering the Ainol Novo 7 Crystal, a 7-inch tablet that runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean that only costs $139.  That’s $60 dollars cheaper than the $199 Nexus 7.  Suddenly, Ainol seems to have a good fighting chance.

In terms of design, the Novo 7 Crystal seems to share the design of the Novo 7 Aurora.  If it’s the same build and materials, it’s actually good news since I have reviewed the Aurora and I liked its build quality.  The Novo 7 Crystal comes in white and black colors.

The Novo 7 Crystal is not bad when it comes to hardware specs.   The cheap price tag gets you a new dual-core 1.5GHz Amlogic 8726-M6 Cortex A9 processor, a Mali 400 GPU, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, Wi-Fi connectivity, a microSD card slot, a mini-USB port and a mini-HDMI.  The 7-inch IPS display has 1,024 x 600 resolution which means it has wide viewing angles compared to non-IPS displays.  The Novo 7 Crystal will be WiFi-only so if you’re looking for 3G, this is not for you.  For the $139 price however, the lack of 3G connectivity should really not be an issue.

The Ainol Novo 7 Crystal starts shipping on September 28, though there’s no word if the Philippines will get the tablet immediately at launch.

  1. Just got this now for P6,299. The Ainol Flame costs P8,999 and I don’t really need the rear camera so this is a good buy. Plus the front camera is 2mp compared to 0.3mp of most dual-cam tablets, which is good for video chatting. I was very impressed with its screen resolution and the response time. The speakers are not that good, but for its price, I would say it’s a very good buy. Most importantly, it comes with 1 year warranty.
