Globe to Start Offering Nano-SIMs

Globe Telecom will start offering nano-SIMs starting this month.  This is an anticipated move from local telcos.  It’s no secret that nano-SIM technology is the new technology in mobile phone subscriber identity module (SIM) or SIM cards.  Nano-SIM cards are designed to be backward- compatible with existing SIM cards and will offer the same functionality as all current SIM cards.

If you think the micro-SIM is small, the nano-SIM is even smaller.  A smaller SIM card leaves the extra space for the other components of a device.  The new nano-SIM cards will be 40% smaller than the micro-SIM and will measure 12.3 millimeters wide, 8.8 millimeters high, and 0.67 millimeters thick.

The upcoming iPhone 5 is widely rumored to feature a nano-SIM slot, and the announcement from Globe Telecom about the release of nano-SIMs coincides with the launch of the iPhone 5.   There are two standards for nano-SIMs being pushed in the telecom industry, one from Apple and another from Nokia.  If the nan-SIM that Globe will be selling is meant for the iPhone 5, that certainly means it is the one being pushed by Apple.

Globe says it has ordered as much as five times more nano-SIMs than its regular SIM stocks.  That means that nano-SIMs will indeed be the standard for future handsets.
