Apple Announces new iPod Touch with 4-inch Display, iOS 6, Siri and 5MP Camera

Aside from the iPhone 5, Apple also unveiled a new iPod Touch with a new screen and a new design.  It has been two years since Apple updated the design of the iPod Touch and the new design introduces a lot of changes.

For starters, the new iPod Touch sports a 4-inch display, the same size and aspect ratio as the iPhone 5.   It’s therefore longer than the older model which had a 3.5-inch screen.  The processor of the iPod Touch is now faster but it’s not the same A6  processor used on the new iPhone.  Instead, it uses the A5 processor found in the iPhone 4S.

The new iPod Touch is thinner and lighter now.  It comes in at only 6.1mm thick and weighs only 88 grams.  If you though the old iPod Touch is thin, it’s much thinner now.  Apple also improved the battery life of the new iPod Touch.  It is now capable of music playback of up to 40 hours.  That’s almost 2 days.

The rear-facing camera has also been improved.  It is now packing a 5-megapixel sensor with LED flash and backside illumination.  As to the front-facing camera, it can now shoot 720p video. The new device will also feature Bluetooth 4.0 and 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi and will support AirPlay mirroring.

Apple’s new iPod Touch is a bit playful in terms of design.  It also offers a lot of color options, so you’re not stuck with black and white models now.   The new iPod touch will now come in pink, yellow, blue, white, silver, black, and slate colors.  To add to the playful character of the new iPod, Apple included a hook that supports lanyards.  Apple has offers its own lanyard called the Loop.

The iPod Touch will run iOS 6.  Siri is also now in iPod Touch which was only previously found on the iPhone.  It will be available starting October in 32GB and 64GB variants.  The 32GB version costs $299 while the 64GB version is priced at $399.  Pre-orders will begin on September 14.
