Samsung Galaxy S III Mini Now Official

The rumor was confirmed by Samsung yesterday, and now we finally know the official specs and features of the Samsung Galaxy S III Mini.  At a press launch in Germany, Samsung took the lid off its newest Galaxy device, the Samsung Galaxy S III Mini.  The name says it all. It’s a smaller version of the wildly popular Samsung Galaxy S III. The Mini certainly shares its looks with the Galaxy S III but it has a smaller 4-inch display while the bigger version has a 4.8-inch screen.

The specs of the Samsung Galaxy S III Mini have been considerably dumbed down.  This phone is clearly a mid-range phone, not a top device like the Galaxy S III.  I honestly believe this device should not have used the Galaxy S III name as the specs are nowhere near the specs of the bigger phone.  For instance, instead of the quad-core Exynos processor on the S3, the Mini features a dual-core 1GHz chip.  It is paired with 1GB RAM and 8 or 16GB of internal storage that is expandable up to 32GB via microSD.

The 4-inch display on the Mini is a Super AMOLED screen with 800×480 WVGA resolution.  This should be good enough, but not as good as the display on the Galaxy S III.  The Mini also packs a 5-megapixel camera that takes 720p videos, a VGA front-facing camera, NFC capability, and a host of connectivity options that include 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, GPS, GLONASS and Bluetooth 4.0.

The Samsung Galaxy S III Mini will run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with TouchWiz UI on top.  The phone will also feature most of the software features found on the bigger Galaxy S III like S Voice, Smart Stay and S Beam.  Pricing and availability are not yet known.
