Review: Logitech G600 MMO Gaming Mouse

There are millions of dedicated gamers in the world that’s why gaming is a huge industry.  A huge chunk of these gamers are in the PC platform, and a chunk of that are in MMO or massively multiplayer online gaming.  Count popular titles like World of Warcraft, Star Wars: The Old Republic and Eve Online as games in this genre.  MMO games are known for having several in-game options, necessitating the use of specialized mice to simplify controls and make options easily accessible.  One of the newer MMO gaming mice in the market is the Logitech G600.  This competes with products like the Razer Naga and Cyborg R.A.T. 9 which are both multi-button mice just like the Logitech G600.

Design

The Logitech G600 is a stylish mouse despite the plethora of buttons it has.  Thankfully, the Logitech G600 still manages to be minimalist in design despite the fact that it is replete with programmable buttons.  It is huge for the average Filipino hand but it’s not too huge to be bulky or uncomfortable to use.  On the contrary, the Logitech G600 is as comfortable to use as any well-designed mouse can be, mixing comfort and utility in one extremely compact package.

The Logitech G600 is designed for users with palm grip and is available only to right-handed users.  Left-handed gamers should therefore look somewhere else.  Personally, I prefer mice that are tailored to a specific hand than a universal mouse that ends up being uncomfortable to use for both right-handed and left-handed users.  The Logitech G600, thankfully, does not aim to be an ambidextrous mouse.  For right handed users, which comprise the majority of users anyway, the Logitech G600 is very comfortable to use.

The Logitech G600 is ergonomically designed.  It takes into consideration the shape and curves found on the average hand, the result being a mouse that fits perfectly, offering the maximum possible comfort to the user.  The fact that Logitech was able to put a panel of buttons on one side is quite a feat.   Logitech even put an extra clickable button on the rightmost part of the G600’s surface called the G-Shift which acts as a shift button that changes the functions of the keys on the mouse’s panel.  The G-Shift button is actually one of the more important features of the G600 as this feature sets this mouse apart from the competition.

The comfort level is only enhanced by the fact that Logitech used a matte finish instead of the annoying glossy plastic that sometimes stick to the skin.  The unit I reviewed has an all-black finish but it is also available in white.

The Logitech G600 has 20 buttons all in all. If that’s quite unbelievable, let us count them all.  There are three primary buttons which are the standard left click and right click and the aforementioned “G-Shift”.  The scroll wheel is clickable so it’s also a button, and it can also be clicked to the left and to the right to command previous and next functions.  Below the scroll wheel are two buttons, the G7 and G8 which are responsible for toggling profiles and adjusting DPI.  That’s a total of eight buttons found on top of the G600.  The twelve other buttons are found on the panel at the left side of the mouse.

The Logitech G600 uses a braided cable that should make hardcore gamers happy.  These cables look and feel sturdy and should easily withstand heavy use.  Despite being braided, however, it does not easily tangle and is still smooth during use.  This is definitely a plus for the G600.

Features and Performance

The main feature of the Logitech G600 MMO gaming mouse is of course the 12-button panel on the side that is customizable.  This panel has 12 buttons that can be used to assign functions, commands and abilities that can be general or game-specific.  The 12 buttons change function with the press of the G-Shift button so all in all, there are 24 buttons that the gamer can play around with.  This transfers a lot of tasks from the keyboard to the mouse, freeing the other hand to concentrate on other more important functions in the process.  This is the reason hardcore MMO gamers need a specialized mouse like the G600.  In intense games, the mouse spells the difference between winning and losing.

The 12 keys, apart from being adorned with LED lighting, also protrudes alternately, making it easy to get familiarized with the buttons.  This also prevents the accidental pressing of buttons during gameplay.  Logitech even used a slightly higher tension on the buttons, making it really difficult to accidentally press the buttons.  Despite the size of the G600, all buttons on the panel are easily accessible.

Using the G-Shift interrupts all other mouse buttons so you should be careful in using the button.  Thankfully, the G-Shift button is quite far to the right and has a harder feedback so it is also quite safe and also quite hard to accidentally press.

The 12 keys are not only useful for gaming.  For desktop programs, these keys can be assigned functions to help users increase productivity.  In Photoshop, for instance, the buttons can be assigned functions that are commonly used.  For full customization options, Logitech has provided a free software that can be downloaded from its website.

The G7 and G8 buttons below the scroll wheel serve different purposes. The G7 button which protrudes a little lower than the G8 button is a profile selector for switching between three preset profiles.  Two of these profiles are MMO-related, i.e., Primary MMO and Alternative MMO, and one is designed for general gaming.  With preloaded profiles, you only need to plug in the USB cable and you can start playing immediately.  No programming is required.  The buttons on the left panel can even tell you which profile you are currently in.  You can set the panel to display a specific light for a specific profile.  If you don’t want that, you can simply set the light to glow at a cycle or to simply pulse or you can turn it off completely. The profiles and the lighting settings can be modified with the Logitech G600’s downloadable software.

The G8 button, on the other hand, controls the DPI settings on the fly.  The G600 is capable of being controlled from 50 to 8200 DPI.  The top DPI value is very sensitive, allowing users to even use the mouse on smooth surfaces.  I tried this and was stunned that the mouse still works even on smooth, glossy plastic.

The main buttons on the Logitech G600 are a delight to use.  The feedback is extremely precise, yet the buttons are soft to click.  Even the tilt control on the scroll wheel is easy to use.  Moving the G600 around is not an issue as the feet are smooth and slick. However, the mouse has quite a heft compared to other mice, so it’s not easy to lift.  With time, however, it’s easy to get accustomed to the size and weight of the G600.
