Apple Unveils 13-inch Macbook Pro with Retina Display

Apple’s 15-inch Macbook Pro with retina display was praised for having the best display ever on a notebook.  Now Apple is bringing the retina goodness to its 13-inch Macbook Pro model.

The new Macbook Pro has a 13-inch display with 2,560 x 1,600 resolution which is four times better than the display on the previous model. It’s also touted as the lightest Macbook ever, weighing only 3.5 pounds, a full pound lighter than the older model.

In terms of thickness, it’s also better than the older model. It’s 25% thinner at just .75-inch thick.  The new Macbook features MagSafe 2, dual Thunderbolts, SD card, HDMI output, dual USB 3.0 and Facetime HD camera with 720p recording.  There’s no optical drive. The internals include up to 768GB of flash, 8GB of RAM, Core i5 or i7 Ivy Bridge chips, 802.11n WiFi and Bluetooth 4.  Apple claims that the 13-inch Macbook Pro Retina will last up to 7 hours on a single charge.

In terms of software, the Macbook Pro will run Mountain Lion with the usual features like AirPlay and voice dictation.

The price is quite steep.  The base model with 2.5GHz Core i5 CPU, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of flash storage runs for $1,699.  The model with higher specs is priced at $1,999 featuring a 2.9GHz Core i7 CPU and 768GB hard drive.
