Elliptic Labs Announces Windows 8 Gesture Suite

We are living in the future. That’s certainly how it feels like with all the technological advancements that we are seeing today.  Another innovation that brings us nearer to a Minority Report-like environment is touchless gesture controls.  We have encountered this in the Xbox Kinect and in some gesture-controlled TVs but the one developed by Elliptic Labs called Windows 8 Gesture Suite is supposed to be better.

While Kinect and others rely on camera to do the trick, Elliptic Labs uses ultrasound and microphones.   This makes it possible to control Windows 8 devices using natural hand movements all around a screen.  The technology from is not limited to detecting movement within camera view.  Elliptic Labs says the technology detects natural hand movements that extend beyond the camera, even the area surrounding the screen.  Also, unlike camera-based gesture recognition technology, Windows 8 Gesture Suite works even without light.  Thus, it will work even in the dark.

Elliptic Labs is offering a Starter Kit for laptops which allows its partners to use ultrasound-based gestures without designing hardware.  There’s also an SDK that incorporates natural gestures into devices, complete with sample applications.  The Windows 8 Gesture Suite, Starter-Kit and SDK are available to manufacturers and developers.  Actual products incorporating Gesture Suite are expected to be released in about 12 to 14 months according to Elliptic Labs.
