Sony just unveiled its newest Android flagship handset at the ongoing CES event. The new handset is called the Xperia Z and it has the necessary features to make it one of the best Android handsets in the market today. It may not be the best in terms of specs and features but it’s still clearly one of the best when overall features are taken into consideration.
The Sony Xperia Z is a 5-inch phone with 1080p full HD display. This makes the Xperia Z a “phablet” as it is the same size as the original Galaxy Note, but with the current crop of huge display handsets, it appears that 5-inchers are just huge phones now, not small tablets. The so-called phablet category started by Samsung is therefor probably changing and should be reserved for 6-inchers. In any case, the Xperia Z’s 5-inch display is the main story here since it is a 1080p full HD display with 1080 x 1920 resolution, translating to a 443ppi pixel density and therefore making it way better than the Retina display on the iPhone 5. The TFT Reality Display features an upgraded Bravia Mobile Engine 2 that’s said to augment colors and contrast on videos and stills.
The other major story is the 13 megapixel camera on the phone which uses Sony’s Exmore RS sensor that’s capable of taking HDR video. Sony improved the algorithms for automatic settings and offers a 9-megapixel burst mode at 10 fps and the ability to capture stills during video. For the front-facing camera, you’ll get a 2-megapixel Exmor R sensor.
To power the phone, the Sony Xperia Z uses a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor paired with 2GB of RAM. In terms of connectivity, the Xperia Z has the usual Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and the addition of 4G LTE and NFC compatibility. The NFC feature connects the phone to Sony devices like speakers, headphones and TVs.
The Sony Xperia Z will run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out of the box. It’s also water and dust resistant, a feature that sets the handset apart from other high end Android phones. The phone will be available during the first quarter of 2013.
