Lenovo K900 with Intel Clover Trail+ Unveiled

 

The Lenovo K900 is a noteworthy device, not only because of its impressive hardware specs but also because of the processor that powers it.  We are used to hearing Qualcomm or Nvidia processors in mobile devices but the Lenovo K900 is different.  It is the first ever smartphone to run on Intel’s new mobile processor called Clover Trail+.

Intel first introduced the Medfield processor last year and it was showcased in Lenovo’s K800 smartphone.  We heard nothing much about the device nor the processor since last year’s launch. Intel has apparently been working on a mobile processor that it hopes will be the answer to Qualcomm’s and Nvidia’s popular offerings.  The result is the Clover Trail+ processor, a dual-core Atom chip clocked at 2GHz.

The Lenovo K900 features a 5.5-inch 1080p IPS display covered by Gorilla Glass 2.  This size is similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Note II, but the 1080p display of the K900 easily beats the display of the Note II.  The main camera on the K900 is also impressive.  It’s a 13-megapixel shooter using Sony’s Exmor BSI sensor with F1.8 aperture and dual flash, making the K900 ideal for low light shots.  It’s the same as the camera on the Sony Xperia Z.   Lenovo K900’s 2-megapixel front camera boasts of an 88-degree super wide viewing angle.  This is what I’ve noticed with the new handsets announced at CES 2013 – 1080p displays and 13-megapixel cameras are standard offerings.

The other known specs of the Lenovo K900 include 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage that’s expandable via microSD slot.  The entire package is encased in a 6.9mm-thick body made of stainless steel alloy plus polycarbonate.  Despite the size and the hardware inside the device, the Lenovo K900 only weighs 162g.  The Lenovo K900 runs Android with Lenovo’s Le Phone skin on top.  Thankfully, the skin may be disabled.

There’s no word yet as to pricing.  As to availability, the K900 will start shipping in China from April and will be available in other countries afterwards, most likely including the Philippines.
