Globe, Smart Activate LTE on the iPhone 5 Through iOS 6.1

When the iPhone 5 was launched in the Philippines, mobile internet was only available on the 3G network.  Mobile internet on 3G is fine for most people but if you have tried to use HSPA+, 3G suddenly becomes frustrating.  I was on 3G since I purchased my iPhone and I was surprised to discover upon activation that 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) was not available at launch.  Luckily, Apple has decided to activate LTE and Globe has recently confirmed this.

Globe announced that subscribers on iPhone 5 postpaid plans can now experience LTE on their devices by updating to Apple’s latest mobile software, the iOS 6.1.   Mobile internet on LTE is capable of speeds of up to 42 Mbps.  Globe says users of iPhone 5 will be able to enjoy LTE without having to upgrade their plans or paying extra charges.

To enjoy LTE coverage on their iPhone 5, subscribers only need to update to iOS 6.1 and use an LTE nano-SIM.  So even with LTE, postpaid subscribers will not incur additional fees and they don’t need to shift to a different or higher data plan.  Globe says LTE will be available to everyone on LTE-enabled devices regardless of their plan subscription.

Globe’s LTE is available in Makati, Manila, Pasig City, Quezon City, Taguig City, Muntinlupa, Mandaluyong, Cebu City, and Boracay.

UPDATE:  iPhone 5 users on Smart network will also get LTE activation by updating to iOS 6.1.  It’s not clear, however, if LTE on the network requires additional fees or an update to a higher plan.
