Nokia Lumia 620 Windows Phone 8 Handset Priced at P11,600

The Windows Phone operating system is smooth.  No one can deny that.  It’s a rather lightweight OS compared to iOS and Android but it’s not necessarily better.  The question of which OS is the best is actually answered by your needs and your preferences.  Some would say it’s Android, and I would not refute this since Android has recently made huge advances in terms of features and functionality whereas iOS has somehow lagged behind, although it is, by itself a really good OS and is admittedly the smoothest.  Window Phone, on the other hand, is playing catch up and the fact that it has not gained much traction to date makes it harder for Microsoft to convince smartphone users that it is an OS worth checking out.

If you haven’t used Windows Phone OS yet, believe me when I say it is a surprisingly good OS.  I like how quick it opens apps and the animations definitely add to the experience.  The sad thing is, there is no phone that’s really as good as the iPhone 5 or the Samsung Galaxy S III that can showcase what Windows Phone can really do.  There’s Nokia Lumia 920 and HTC Windows Phone 8X and although they are good handsets by themselves, they are not as good as the iPhone 5 or the Galaxy S III, or at least not effective in convincing users to switch to Windows Phone OS.

Another reason why users are reluctant in trying Windows Phone OS is the unavailability of cheap handsets running the OS.  Nokia, however, is slowly changing this.   The Finnish company announced the Nokia Lumia 620 last December and it’s this handset that will bring Windows Phone 8 to the masses.  The handset is priced at $249, a rather cheap price point compared to the other Windows Phone offerings in the market.  The Lumia 620’s strength is in the processor.  It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor with 1 Ghz dual-core CPUs.  For an OS as light as Windows Phone 8, this processor is more than capable of doing a good job when it comes to multi-tasking.  It is paired by 512 of RAM but this should not be a real issue with Windows Phone OS.  Previous flagship phones from Nokia had 512 of RAM and they performed well in actual use.  Rounding up the main specs are the 3.8-inch TFT WVGA 800×480 ClearBlack display, 5-megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash, VGA front-facing camera, 8GB of internal storage, microSD card slot, NFC connectivity and 1300mAh.  The Lumia 620 comes with 7GB of SkyDrive storage.

Just like the Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820, the Lumia 620 features bright, playful colors.  It will be available in lime green, orange, magenta, yellow, cyan, white and black colors.  The back cover is replaceable and actually reminds me of the Nokia 5110, the handset that made Nokia a household name.  The phone is a bit pudgy, but from early reviews, it seems like the thickness is not an issue and the phone is in fact a delight to hold.  But this of course is hearsay at this point and until I am able to put my hands on an a Lumia 620, there’s no way to corroborate this. The Nokia’s Lumia 620 is the best budget Windows Phone handset right now.  It has a better display than the HTC Windows Phone 8S, and has more memory to offer.   The rest of the features are quite similar.

The Nokia Lumia 620 should be available soon in the Philippines, and might even be available already.  Nokia had a January 2013 launch schedule in Asia, with launches in Europe and the Middle East to follow soon thereafter.

UPDATE:  According to Nokia Philippines, the Lumia 620 will debut at the Nokia Stores this weekend (February 16, 2013) and will retail for P11,600.  It will initially come in black, cyan, green, white and yellow colors with magenta to follow.

  1. Nokia Lumia 920 not as good as iphone 5 and sg3? Have you had the chance to review the lumia 920? Aside from the lack of apps which is microsoft’s shortcomings and not nokia’s, lumia 920 is way better than both iphone 5 & sg3. I’ve been using my lumia 920 for more than a month. I am a previous iphone user and played with the latest ios6 update. I also have the first note and the latest android update. I can tell you my experience on all 3 OSes. Camera, hardware, durability plus UI of the WP8 os makes the lumia 920 stand out against this two anytime. We are responders and even if i have my gloves on i can use my lumia 920. Try it on your iphone 5 and sg3. So pls straighten your facts before stating that misleading statement of yours.
