Sony PlayStation 4 Unveiled

As previously announced, Sony unveiled the PlayStation 4 or PS4 gaming console but surprisingly, it was more of an unveiling of a concept and an idea instead of an actual product unveiling since the actual PlayStation 4 hardware was not shown to the public.    What was mentioned instead was how the console will work and what initial games will launch on the successor to the PlayStation 3.  The only hardware that was shown was the new DualShock 4 game controller.  The event was aptly entitled “See the Future” since the PS4 will launch too far in the future, specifically towards the end of 2013.  No pricing details were revealed so it’s too early to say if the console will be more affordable or more expensive than Sony’s current console.

The PlayStation 4 is said to be based on a “supercharged PC architecture” with an X86 processor, enhanced PC-style GPU, and 8GB of GDDR5 unified high-speed memory.  It will have 8 CPU cores, making it capable of churning out “almost 2 teraflops of computational performance”.   The power allows for 30,000 polygons to be rendered in real time.  So far, this description of the hardware sounds amazing for a gaming console.  Actual performance is still a mystery since the actual device is not yet available.

The DualShock 4 controller has a touchpad just like the PS Vita and a light bar on the back that will identify players, changing colors during play.  The controller has a dedicated share button that lets users broadcast their game live to friends.  These friends can then post to the user’s screen and can even take over the controller.

Sony has solved the boot time problem since the PS4 will now allow players to suspend and resume play just by pressing the power button. The PS4 also has a secondary chip with the specific task of managing uploads and downloads even if the power is off.  Players will also welcome the fact that in PS4, digital titles will be playable as they’re being downloaded.  That’s not all there is when it comes to new features. The PS4 is also said to have an always-on video compression that will let users upload video as they go, letting users share their games easily.

PS4 will also let users watch games being played by others and lets them play on another player’s system.  Sony is also taking advantage of the popularity of smartphones and apps as there will be a companion app for devices that also allows browsing of videos.  Sony will also take advantage of Facebook and Ustream to enhance the PS4 experience.

So far, the PS4 sounds amazing. What’s only missing now is the image of the actual device. As to pricing, rumors say the PS4 could cost around $400.
