HP Slate 7 Android Tablet Announced, Priced at $169.99

HP is officially back in the tablet business.  After disappointing the public with the HP TouchPad and practically abandoning its own webOS platform, HP now has a new tablet, and its running Android.  The new tablet is not a specs beast and definitely not revolutionary by any means but it’s definitely a start. HP is a huge player and in time, we should expect really impressive tablets from the company.

The new tablet is called the HP Slate 7 and as the name implies, it’s a 7-inch tablet.  The market is crowded with 7-inch tablets so HP is certainly up against tough competitors, the most notable of which is Google’s Nexus 7, the cheapest of which costs only $199.  The HP Slate 7 is priced at $169.99, or $30 cheaper than Google’s tablet.  In terms of specs, however, the Nexus 7 is much better so the $30 added price looks more than reasonable.

The HP Slate 7 features a dual-core 1.6GHz ARM Cortex-A9, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, microSD expansion slot, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, a 3-megapixel rear camera and a VGA front camera.  The 7-inch FFS+ LCD display has a 1024 x 600 resolution which is supposed to feature wide viewing angles and a nice low light performance.  If you play a lot of tunes on your tablet, the HP Slate 7 will probably catch your attention since it has a set of stereo speakers that’s enhanced by Beats Audio.  Battery life is said to last for five hours during video playback.  The design of the tablet is simple yet it looks sleek enough and what makes it good is it has stainless steel frame, not the plastic material we are accustomed to when it comes to cheap tablets.  The HP Slate 7 comes in at 10.7mm thick and weighs less than a pound.

What makes the Nexus 7 better than the Slate 7, you ask?  The Google-design product has a faster quad-core Tegra 3 processor and has GPS and NFC, not to mention a bigger 16GB storage capacity.  However, the Nexus 7 has no microSD slot and has no rear camera.

The HP Slate 7 runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with just a few tweaks.   It also features ePrint which lets users print documents directly to a compatible HP printer.  It will be available in April.
