Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 Unveiled

Get ready to welcome another Note in the already extensive line-up of Samsung Galaxy devices.   The Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 was recently unveiled and it apparently has an identity crisis.  It’s a tablet, alright but it also has a phone functionality, so is it a huge smartphone or is it simply another mid-sized tablet?  Whatever the classification, the Galaxy Note 8.0 is a tablet that makes phone calls possible.

The Galaxy Note 8.0 is the third Note offering from Samsung.  The other two are of course the Galaxy Note II and the Galaxy Note 10.1.  The three devices share Samsung’s design philosophy and the Note 8.0 in fact looks like an oversized Note II.  The materials are plastic as expected so this will probably incite another “plastic versus metal” debate.  Plastic has its advantages, but some still prefer the solid metallic finish.   The Note 8.0 is quite thin at only 7.95mm and it’s also light, coming in at only 338g.

Being a Note device, the Galaxy Note 8.0 naturally has an S Pen included which of course can be used to input date on its 8-inch 1280 x 800 TFT display with a per pixel density of 189ppi.  At the size of 8 inches, you can’t help but wonder if Samsung is positioning this as a competitor to the iPad mini which has a display of 7.9 inches.  My guess is that Samsung’s strategy is precisely that.

The device is powered by a 1.6GHz Exynos 4 Quad Core processor coupled with 2GB of RAM.   It has16 or 32GB of internal storage, which is still expandable through the tablet’s microSD card slot, and a generous 4,600mAh battery.   The tablet’s other specs include a 5-megapixel rear camera, a 1.2 megapixel front camera, WiFi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, A-GPS, GLONASS, IR blaster and HSPA+.   There will be LTE and Wi-Fi only models according to Samsung.

The Galaxy Note 8.0 will run Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean with TouchWiz UX skin.  It will come with Samsung’s popular software enhancements like S Note, S Planner, Smart Stay, Multi-Window and Air View functionality, AllShare Play and Cast, along with other apps and features.  The tablet will also have a reading mode and Smart Remote.

Details as to pricing and availability of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 in the Philippines are still unknown.  A second quarter launch is rumored to be a possibility.

  1. I’m going to buy this when it will be in the market (which I hope that would be very soon), bcoz it has a phone functionality. But I hope this won’t be above P16k.
