Twitter #music Announced, Now Available on iOS, Android App to Follow

A new music service was recently announced by Twitter.  It’s simply called Twitter #music and it’s a music search and music streaming service that uses data on Twitter.  Twitter doesn’t host the music being used on the service so it’s tied up with iTunes, Spotify and Rdio.  For users in the Philippines, don’t get excited yet as the service is not yet available in the country.  Twitter #music will first roll out in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.  Twitter #music is a separate app and is only available on the iPhone 5 for now.  An Android version is said to be in the works, with wider availability compared to the current iOS app.  Twitter #music is also available on the portal music.twitter.com.

What the Twitter #music app does is use Twitter activity, including Tweets and engagement, to identify and feature the most popular tracks and look for emerging artists.  The service therefore pulls all the tracks that are being listened by the people one follows on Twitter by scanning their tweets.  Twitter #music also features the songs that other people are listening to.  Twitter #music also highlights artists’ music-related Twitter activity by showing their profiles, the music artists they follow.  The app then lets users listen to the songs of these artists. Users can then to follow these artists or simply listen to their music.  Using the Twitter #music app, one can tweet the songs he is listening to.

As previously mentioned, Twitter #music works with iTunes, Spotify and Rdio.  iTunes provides the song previews and you will only be able to listen to the full song through Spotify or Rdio.

There are apps that offer a similar service on Twitter but Twitter #music has more features.  Since it is backed by Twitter itself, we should expect a cohesive service and a responsive app once it becomes available to users in the Philippines.
