New iPod Touch 16GB Released, Priced at P12,490

Apple has released a new variant of the iPod Touch.  It has a 16GB storage capacity and a cheaper $229 price tag (about P9,300).  The catch is this: the new iPod Touch has no rear camera. This is a necessary compromise in order to meet the low price tag but it’s one that’s definitely unpopular.  Mobile photography is becoming widely popular, with apps like Instagram and Fickr getting more users each day. An iPod Touch without a camera is not as attractive as the other iPod Touch models.  However, if you’re only after the iOS experience and the popular iOS apps and games, the new iPod Touch is still a good device to own.

The new iPod Touch still has a front-facing camera which you can use for FaceTime.  There are no other color options apart from silver and the mechanical loop has vanished on the new model.  Apart from these few changes, the new 16GB iPod Touch is identical to the 32GB and 64GB variants. The main specs are still the same including the design.  You’ll still get a 4-inch Retina display and a dual-core A5 processor.  It still comes with EarPods.

If you have the extra money to spend, it will be best if you get the 32GB variant with camera that retails for $299.  But that’s just me. Others might find the extra $70 too much.  The iPod Touch 16GB is now available in the Apple online store. It should be available in retail stores very soon.

UPDATE: Apple’s online store in the Philippines has the new iPod Touch 16GB on the product list and it retails for P12,490.  Go here for more details.
