iPhone 5 vs. BlackBerry Z10 vs. Samsung Galaxy S4

Competition in the Smartphone world continues to heat up. The new generation of flagship Smartphones from Apple, Samsung, and BlackBerry feature faster processors, more storage, and better cameras than ever before. Let’s compare three of the hottest devices on the market— Apple’s iPhone 5, Samsung’s Galaxy S4, and the Blackberry Z10 – to see how they measure up.

Samsung Galaxy S4

In recent years, Samsung has overtaken HTC for control of the Android market, and thanks to the Galaxy S4, it’s likely to continue its rule. But how does the Galaxy S4 compare to devices on other operating systems? Earlier this year, the popular tech blog CNET posted a spec-by-spec comparison of the S4, iPhone 5, and Z10, and at first glance, the S4 definitely impresses. The S4 boasts the fastest processor of the bunch—a 1.9GHz quad-core Snapdragon 600. With 13-megapixels, it also has the most impressive camera. If you’re looking for a lot of storage for photos and music, the Galaxy S4 may be your best bet as well: it comes with up to 64GB of built-in storage and up to 64GB of expandable storage via a microSD memory card slot.

But the S4 has its share of shortcomings, too. For one thing, it’s by far the largest, making it somewhat awkward as a handheld device. For another, users have complained that the Android Jelly Bean 4.2 operating system with TouchWiz can be a bit of a challenge to navigate.

iPhone 5

While still a solid device, the release of the iPhone 5 was a bit of a disappointment to some. The iOS6 update did not present much of an upgrade over the previous iOS, making it feel a little dated in a market that’s constantly evolving. Of all three phones, it has the least storage, with up to 64MB of built-in storage but no option for expandable storage.

That being said, the iPhone 5 does earn points for being smaller and lighter (only 112g) than the S4 and Z10, which as Yahoo! News notes, gives it the advantage in terms of portability. The operating system, while dated, is extremely user-friendly.

BlackBerry Z10

BlackBerry has always been the leader for mobiles built for the business world, and the new Z10 is no exception. Professionals will love the new BlackBerry Hub, which updates contacts in real time based on information it collects from your social media accounts. Another advantage of BlackBerry Hub over the home screens on the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S4 is the ability to filter messages and notifications to help you prioritise what’s important. In terms of storage, the Blackberry Z10 offers an advantage over the iPhone 5. While the device only has 16MB of built-in storage, it offers users 64MB of expandable storage.

The latest update to BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) is worth mentioning, especially since BlackBerry has announced plans to release a BBM app for Android and iOS devices this summer, which might make it the go-to messenger service in the future. As well as text chat, group chat, and file sharing, the new BBM features screen sharing, voice and video calls, giving iMessage and other messenger services a run for its money

Last but not least, the Z10 may get the deciding vote for those concerned about price.  Price Panda lists Z10 devices starting at 20,965 PHP, while the Galaxy S4 sells for a minimum of 21,780 PHP and the iPhone 5 for 28,200 PHP.
