5 Tips For Securing Data on Mobile Devices

By now, it’s nothing new to say that we’re living increasingly more of our lives through mobile devices. The rapid spread of incredibly advanced smartphones and tablets has lead to limitless implementation of social, business and entertainment practices on devices that we can fit in our pockets. However, while this development is generally understood and accepted, there is one aspect of mobile technology that is still ignored by far too many people: security.

The fact is, in conducting so much business and social activity through mobile devices, we inadvertently store a great deal of sensitive personal information on them. From names and passwords, to communications, and in some cases even addresses and payment information, we keep many things on our phones and tablets that we wouldn’t want to fall into the wrong hands. So, to help you to avoid security issues that can arise from this reality, here are 5 tips for protecting data on your mobile devices.

Security on Mobile Devices

1. Use A Secure Device Password

Many people don’t bother with passwords for their mobile devices, simply because it’s a bit tedious to have to type in a password each and every time you need to use your device. However, consider the potential consequences if your phone or tablet falls into the wrong hands. The added security of a password protecting your device is well worth the extra 5 seconds it takes you to access your phone.

2. Don’t Store Payment Information

Most people use their mobile devices to pay for something at some point or another. Whether you have a Paypal app that stores your information, a subscription streaming service or publication, or even an app for your bank account, this information can be extremely sensitive. Try to avoid keeping passwords and information stored on these apps and programs, so that nobody can use them to spend your money if you lose your device.

3. Implement Secure File Sharing

Secure file sharing apps and programs can help you to send emails and transfer files with absolute certainty that they will reach the correct recipient. Try downloading the Sharefile app to implement this kind of file transfer security with your mobile device.

4. Delete Files Regularly

Keeping old files is a very insecure practice. You may have old emails that include sensitive information, which you have already seen and acted upon, but which you haven’t deleted. This leaves the files vulnerable to thieves and hackers, which can put you at risk. To avoid this problem, go through your phone and delete old files periodically.

5. Use Physical Protection For Your Device

Finally, it doesn’t hurt to protect your devices physically from harm. A good strong case on your mobile phone or tablet can save it from damage, which in turn protects information and files you have stored on your devices.
