Android 4.4 is Android KitKat, Not Key Lime Pie

Everyone was almost sure that the next version of Android will be called Key Lime Pie.  There were many indications that lead to this belief and even Google admitted that it originally considered Key Lime Pie as the name for the next version of Android.   After Android Jelly Bean, the next name was sure to start with the letter “K”.  After all, that’s how the Android naming scheme works.  We had Cupcake (1.5), Donut (1.6), Eclair (2.0), Froyo (2.2), Gingerbread (2.3), Honeycomb (3.0), Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0), and Jelly Bean (4.1-4.3).

Google decided to drop Key Lime Pie and has announced that the next Android, which is Android 4.4, will be known as KitKat.  Yes, the same chocolate brand but without the space in between.  The logo for Android KitKat is shown below.  You should get acquainted with this logo since it will be on millions of devices and all over the internet as soon as Android 4.4 is officially announced.

What do we expect from the Android KitKat?  Nothing much has been said to date, only these lines:

Android is the operating system that powers over 1 billion smartphones and tablets. Since these devices make our lives so sweet, each Android version is named after a dessert: Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, and Jelly Bean. As everybody finds it difficult to stay away from chocolate we decided to name the next version of Android after one of our favorite chocolate treats, Kitkat®!

It’s our goal with Android KitKat to make an amazing Android experience available for everybody.

With the announcement of Android KitKat, Google also announced that there are now over one billion Android device activations.  That’s a lot of devices.

Nestle apparently gave Google the blessing to use the name KitKat and in fact the companies have joint promotions going on.  No money changed hands according to reports so this means that Nestle merely wanted the publicity that will be generated by Google’s use of the name KitKat.   Android is widely popular and that popularity will only grow in the coming years so Nestle has a reason to thank Google for using the name.
