Amazon Kindle Fire HDX Announced, Comes in 7-inch and 8.9-inch Sizes

Amazon has surprise a lot with the announcement of new Kindles.  Compared to other announcements, the recent Kindle event was smaller in scope and quieter compared to previous Amazon events.

Two new Kindles have been added by Amazon to its tablet lineup.  They are called the Amazon Kindle HDX and they come in two sizes – 7-inch and 8.9-inch.  They are still cheap tablets but Amazon’s use of industry-leading hardware makes them among the best tablet around. The 7-inch model has a screen resolution of 1920×1200 while the 8.9-inch model has a 2560×1600 resolution.  These are sharper than full HD and if reports are to be believed, the displays are amazing with good color reproduction and good viewing angles.  Amazon did not stop with the display as it also used fast processors on the Kindle Fire HDX.  Both tablets run on 2.2GHz Snapdragon 800 SoCs paired with 2GB of RAM.  These are significant upgrades from the previous Kindle Fire models.

Amazon wants attention so it went further and improved on the design of the previous Kindle Fires.  The Kindle Fire HDX features great design, with a finish that combines matter and glossy materials.  The back is mainly matte, with the top portion showing glossy finish that functions as design highlight more than anything.   As to thickness and weight, the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX also boasts of improvements over the old models.  The new 7-inch Kindle Fire HDX comes in at only 0.35 inches and weighs only 10.7 ounces, down from 0.41 inches and 13.9 ounces in the older model.  The 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HDX, on the other hand, comes in at only 0.31 inches thick and weighs 13.2 ounces, again down from 0.35 inches and 19.2 ounces of the previous model.

Both Kindle Fire HDX sizes have front-facing cameras but it’s only the 8.9-inch model that comes with an rear camera, specifically an 8MP shooter.

The Amazon Kindle Fire HDX run Android 4.2 but it is heavily skinned just like previous Kindle Fire models.  The Kindle Fire HDX runs on Amazon’s own Fire OS 3.0.  It has no access to Google Play but Amazon has its own library of apps.  Fire OS 3.0 has an improved Silk web browsing engine and a feature called “Mayday” which is actually Amazon’s new 24/7 tech support system.

The Amazon Kindle Fire HDX comes in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB capacities. For pricing, the 7-inch HDX model starts at $229 and will be available in October while the 8.9-inch model starts at $379 and will be available in November.
