As concerns over cloud storage privacy worsen, file-sharing company Egnyte has developed Storage Connect, a new system over which companies can transfer and share files without using a cloud network. Organisations that may fear cloud storage are comforted by the idea of the ‘PRISM prevention programme’ used by Storage Connect, as concerns into file protection outside of a firewall have been voiced over the previous months.
Sensitive file sharing
Storage Connect will allow users to mark their most sensitive files as “red data”, which the software is able to protect behind a firewall. An encrypted device, just as an Android or Apple phone, is then used to access the file, making the files far more secure. Vineet Jain, CEO of Egnyte, has said: “Whether due to concerns about privacy, security, intellectual property, or M&A, businesses want a way to combine the simplicity and ease of use associated with cloud-file sharing with the security and privacy of their own infrastructure.” The system, as described by the Chief marketing officer Barry Phillips, differs from the Local Cloud, as that required companies to upload duplicate content of locally stored files to make them accessible to a mobile device. This means that data is still being uploaded to a cloud storage system. However, with Egnyte’s new Storage Connect system, cloud uploads never need to occur as all data remains firmly protected behind the company’s firewall.
The move means in the possible situation of a government agency accessing information without the permission of the company cannot occur, with the most sensitive files a company owns protected with the system. Jain continued: “Our PRISM Protection Programme provides businesses with everything they need to detect cloud-only file sharing services that introduce risk into their company. It also offers a simple yet secure way of accessing and sharing those files from their existing infrastructure that are too sensitive to be shared via the cloud.” Alongside the PRISM Protection, even businesses that are less concerned about the invasion of privacy will be drawn to the product. Much of the sharing system has been updated in this particular software, making the performance second to none.
