Samsung announces Samsung Z, first Tizen phone

The Korean electronics giant announced the Samsung Z late last Sunday. Samsung calls the phone “premium” because of its impressive specs, but the real story here is that it runs Tizen OS, not Android.

Key Specs:

  • 4.8 inch 720p AMOLED display (1280×720)
  • 2.3GHz quad core Snapdragon CPU
  • 16GB of storage (+microSD)
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 8MP rear cam
  • 2.1MP front cam
  • 4G, NFC, WiFi
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • 2600mAh battery
  • Tizen 2.2.1 (with TouchWiz interface)

Apart for the screen and the camera, the specs are what you would expect from a Samsung flagship. It has a fast processor, adequate RAM and storage, plus extras like NFC and the fingerprint sensor. It will also have the faux leather back, but has a squarer look.

By choosing to go with Tizen, Samsung gave consumers another option to choose from, besides Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS. According to Samsung, Tizen delivers “a fast, optimal performance with improved memory management” along with “a faster start up time and immediate multi-tasking capabilities.” Although it won’t have access to Android’s vast ecosystem of apps, it will have its own store, which Samsung will attempt to fill up.

I guess Samsung can afford to take a risk with Tizen. And if it works out for them, then they could lessen their reliance on Google.

At the moment, the Samsung Z is only confirmed to launch in Russia in Q3.
