UPDATE: A number of readers pointed out that LTE-A is not yet 5G, but rather still just 4G. I was directed to two articles (here  and here). Interesting reads.

I can’t believe that its been 2 years since Smart Communications launched Long-Term Evolution (LTE) or 4G in the country. I was eager to test it as soon as I got my hands on an LTE capable phone. It was fast. YouTube videos loaded, with minimal to none buffering times. And now, Smart has announced the availability of a faster LTE-Advance (LTE-A)/5G.

The local telco has been testing the service since August last year, and they were able to record speeds of up to 209.66 mbps. Pretty fast if you ask me.

As claimed by Smart:

With LTE-A, a 10MB file takes less than a second to download, YouTube videos no longer have to buffer, and video calls are almost lag-free. But beyond speed, LTE-A’s main feature is also its capability to allocate more network resources to users when the need arises. Smart started testing LTE-A across the country in August last year, delivering results of more than 100Mbps in Makati City, in Boracay, and in Davao City during the Kadayawan festival.

Hopefully, Smart makes this available to as many locations a the get go. I guess all we need now are LTE-A capable phones.
