Xiaomi unleashes the Mi Note to the world

Last week, Xioami unveiled via live stream its latest flagship, the Mi Note along with a few more devices. As many have suspected, the Chinese company announced the powerful the 5.7 inch phablet, rather than a successor of the Mi4.

Mi Note

The Mi Note comes with a 5.7 inch full HD display with a pixel density of 386 ppi, and a metal framed body. To further cement its flagship status, the phablet is powered by a 2.5GHz quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801, Adreno 330 GPU and 3GB of RAM. Its main shooter is a 13MP Sony sensor with an aperture of f/2.0 and OIS. For selfie lovers, the front camera has 4MP 1/3 inch sensor with large 2-micron pixels for better image quality. Interestingly, the Mi Note might fast become a smartphone for audiophiles as it comes with a Hi-Fi audio system which features 24-bit/192KHz lossless playback support.

Lastly, the Mi Note has a 3,000 mAh battery with Quick Charge 2.o and runs MIUI based on Android 4.4.4 KitKat.

Mi Note Pro

A Mi Note Pro version was also announced. This one also has a 5.7 screen, but of the quad HD variety. It has a resolution of 1440 x 2560 and a pixel density of 515 ppi.

The Mi Note Pro is powered by a Qualcomm MSM8994 Snapdragon 810 processor using the big.LITTLE architecture. The cores include both a 1.5 GHz quad core Cortex-A53 and 2 GHz quad core Cortex-A57. Graphics will be handled by an Adreno 430 GPU, and the multitasking will be a breeze with 4GB of RAM. It doesn’t have a microSD slot either, but I don’t think you’ll need it with 64GB of storage on board. Other specs, like the camera and connectivity options, are the same with the Mi Note. Finally, the Mi Note Pro has a slightly bigger 3,090 mAh battery with Quick Charge 2.o and runs MIUI based on Android 5.0.1 Lollipop.

Mi Note will be available in Xiaomi’s international markets in Q2 2015 and retails for ¥2299 (roughly PHP16,500) for the non-pro, and ¥3299 (roughly PHP24,000) for the Pro version. Local prices and availability will be announced closer to each market’s launch date.

The Internet of Things

At the launch event, Xiaomi founder and CEO Lei Jun also discussed the Internet of Things and how the Chinese tech giant is committed to developing an open ecosystem of smart home devices that can be completely controlled using your Mi phone. Lei noted that the smart device industry has three major pain points: it’s complicated to set up a home appliance from your phone, every appliance needs its own app, and it involves heavy investment in cloud infrastructure.

To solve these pain points, Xiaomi has developed an intelligent module, which is sold at cost to manufacturing partners. The Mi Home app helps to connect all appliances under a single app, while Xiaomi has also developed a common cloud service for its smart home devices. Xiaomi has invested in 25 hardware companies in 2014 and continuously released popular products such as the Mi Band, Mi Air Purifier and Xiaomi Smart Camera.
