Xiaomi launches Yi Action Camera to go against GoPro

Chinese smartphone company Xiaomi has recently unveiled the Yi Camera, an action cam to rival the entry level GoPro Hero. The catch? Its only 499 RMB (for those computing, that’s roughly PHP3,500+).

In terms of specs, the Yi Camera is a lot like the GoPro Hero. Both devices have built-in WiFi for file transfers and remote functions. They also have similar features such as the same waterproof depth of 40m (130 ft), and accessories such as bracket-mounts for your helmet, pet harness, or vehicle.

The similarities end there, however, as Yi Camera’s specs pulls away from the Hero. Besides the lower price, the former is powered by an Ambarella A7LS image processor paired with Sony’s back-illuminated Exmor R BSI CMOS image sensor, allowing the action cam to shoot 1080p, 60fps video, and 16MP still photos. It also weighs significantly less at 72 g. Other specs include a 155-degree wide-angle lens, 3D noise reduction and digital image stabilization.

The Yi Action Camera is currently available only in China and is most likely subject to the company’s popular flash sales. And like you, I am left wondering and hopeful as to when and/or if it will appear on our shores.
