Samsung Galaxy S6 Unboxing, Quick Look and Antutu Score

With all the attention the ZenFone 2 is getting, many have forgotten Samsung’s recently launched Galaxy S6. I’m going to remind you that it’s still here and it’s the Korean tech giant’s most beautiful smartphone to date. Luckily, we were able to grab one through my Smart postpaid line.

Here’s a quick look at the device (We took some pictures too). Presenting the Samsung Galaxy S6.

Unboxed and Fiddled

The Galaxy S6 is without a doubt is the best looking smartphone Samsung has made. The combination of aluminum and glass materials makes for a very premium device. You’ll notice immediately how good it is as soon as you open the box.

Don’t forget to remove the plastic film on the camera before you use the device.

The S6 comes with a fast charger, USB cable, the sim tray opening tool, headphones and the manuals.

A quick look at the device, you’ll notice that it looks similar to another popular smartphone. The front and back panel is made from Gorilla Glass 4. And that speaker grill looks familiar.

The Galaxy S6 uses nano SIMs. Here’s the dual SIM tray and the power button. You’ll need the sim opening tool to access it. The volume keys are at the other side.

The top has an IR port for the remote control. There’s another mic hole here too. You can also see how the color of the face plate changes as it is hit by the light.

The Galaxy S6 comes equipped with a16 MP camera with a large aperture of f/1.9. It bulges out the back in a very noticeable way.

The S6 feels very good in the hand. The build quality is outstanding. It’s far from the plastic construction of it’s predecessors.

TouchWiz’ed

The Galaxy S6 comes with the latest TouchWiz based on Android 5.0.2 Lollipop. To their credit, the Korean company did remove most of it’s bloatware in an effort to streamline their OS. I can didn’t notice any lag.

The new TouchWiz launcher looks better, and the icons are more squarish. The folders are also different, and now feature square icons with the apps in a grid inside. The colors are still a bit cartoony, but definitely looks better than before. For now, I’m not compelled to change the launcher.

Most of Samsung’s apps are gone, but it can be installed from the Galaxy Store if you need it.

Carrier bloatware, however, is present. Good thing you can easily uninstall it directly from the app drawer, or through the Application Manager in Settings.

The Galaxy S6 even received an update as soon as I connected to Wi-Fi. The camera only captured the screen in the dark. I took the picture before I retired to bed.

AnTuTu Score

I installed AnTuTu Benchmark the next day. As soon as I ran the app, it prompted me to download the 64-bit version. Again, I’d like to iterate that the benchmark scores only tell half the story. The best indicator for performance is real world usage. The scores can only tell you so much.

Nevertheless, the Galaxy S6 did not fail to impress and got a score of 51,866.

UPDATE: I got curios as to why the score was relatively low compared to others that ran the test. So, I ran it again. Twice. This time, the Galaxy S6 got a score of 70,801 on the first test, and then 69,131 on the second. More accurate if you ask me.

As you can see, the Galaxy S6 is at the top of the AnTuTu food chain.

Closing Remarks

And that’s our quick look at the Samsung Galaxy S6. It’s a great device and deserves to be called Samsung’s best. Design and build quality add to the very premium feel. And the streamlined TouchWiz is fast and looks great.
