Huawei Honor 6 Plus Review

The Huawei Honor 6 Plus is touted as a mobile photography phone. Definitely #ForTheBrave, the device features dual 8MP cameras and the company’s own HiSilicon Kirin chipset. Let’s take a close look at the device and see how well it fares.

Design

Huawei definitely took a few design cues from iPhones and Xperias to make the Honor 6 Plus. The device looks good with its brushed metal side panels and glass back. Featuring a minimalist design, it has clean lines and nice curved edges.

In the hand, the Honor 6 Plus feels good. It is very solid and the materials look and feel premium. The 5.5 inch display, which has a 73.2% screen-to-body ratio, has small bezels on the the sides, making the device easier to hold and not as unwieldy as it looks.

On the right panel, you’ll find the textured volume keys and power button. You’ll also find the two SIM slots here. One of the SIM slots can double as an SD card slot in case the 32GB storage is not enough.

Display

The Honor 6 Plus’ full HD IPS screen is great. The display quality is definitely one of the best, especially at this price point. It has great contrast and colors, with sufficient brightness. It is readable, even in direct sunlight. And with a pixel density of 401 ppi, images appear sharp, and text are crisp and easy to read.

Performance and Benchmarks

The Honor 6 Plus uses the company’s own HiSilicon Kirin 925 processor. The oct-core chipset does a great job at keeping the device fast and snappy. The device is very smooth. It rarely, if at all, stutters or lags.

Benchmark scores are equally impressive. In Geekbench 3, the Honor 6 Plus scored a 912 in the single-core test, and 3,249 on the multi-core. In AnTuTu Benchmark, it got a 45,283.

It does a good job in gaming as well. It handled most games that I play with ease (Hearthstone, NFS Most Wanted, Asphalt 8).

Camera

The Honor 6 Plus uses a dual 8MP camera setup. In wide aperture mode, this allows for a more creative photography by letting shooters change the focus between the foreground and the background after you take the photo. It also lets you adjust the aperture to lessen or intensify the bokeh or blurriness of the background. Here are some sample image to help illustrate what I mean:

Overall image quality looks good with sufficient detail and color. But if you look closely, you’ll notice the output photos are not as sharp, but still reasonable (especially if you’re looking at it using the phones display). The photos are more than enough for social media.

Conclusion

Huawei really did a good job with the Honor 6 Plus. It is a gorgeous device that performs admirably. Its very smooth with enough oomph for games as well. The dual 8MP cameras may sound gimmicky, but it works and really impresses. This is one highly recommended device.
