Samsung Galaxy S7 edge catches fire while charging

Another Samsung phone caught fire and it’s not a Note7. This time, it’s a Galaxy S7 edge. Thankfully, no one was hurt.

Samsung S7 edge catches fire

The latest incident happened on the morning of May 8, 2017. My friend noticed a burning smell inside their house. When she went to investigate, she was surprised to see that her Galaxy S7 edge was the cause of it. The device caught fire. She left it charging with an OEM charger while having breakfast. Thankfully, they saw it in time and managed to put it out before it got any worse.

It was pretty intense as the resulting heat melted the phone’s chassis and case. It burned all the way through. There was also damage on their nightstand and their bed sheets as well. A quick Google search reveals that this isn’t the first time a Galaxy S7 edge burst into flames while charging. Incidents like this are few and far between, but it does happen.

Samsung Philippines has been alerted about the incident. They were quick to respond and reach out to my friend. At the time of writing, they have picked up the unit and are now conducting an investigation to determine what caused it to short circuit and catch fire.

Samsung’s battery issues came to light when news of Note7 devices bursting into flames broke out. An investigation was launched and the results revealed the problem was caused by faulty components. It eventually led to the recall and subsequent cancellation of the device.

Despite what happened, the Galaxy S7 edge is still one of the best smartphones available in the market today (especially with the launch of the Galaxy S8 which should push the price of the S7 edge down). Seeing as it has been around for almost a year, we shouldn’t worry about this turning into another Note7 fiasco. But just in case, be careful where put your phone (any phone) while charging.
