OPPO F5 and the Vivo V7+

Launched last week, the OPPO F5 arrives with compelling offerings and an affordable price. On the other hand, the Vivo V7+ arrived earlier. It has a higher price point, but offers other variables as well. Let’s do a quick spec comparison and check out what each have to offer..

This comparison is not meant to show which device is better. Its meant to highlight what each device has to offer, despite the varying price points.

Display

The OPPO F5 comes with a 6-inch full HD+ display, while the Vivo V7+ comes with 5.9-inch HD display. The former has a full HD resolution of 2160 x 1080, a pixel density of 402 ppi, and Gorilla Glass 5. The latter sports only HD with a 1440 x 720 resolution, a pixel density of 269 ppi, and Gorilla Glass 3.

Let’s go straight to the point — the Vivo V7+ has an inferior display. The higher resolution and pixel density of the F5 means it is sharper and clearer. But in real life, the screen of the V7+ is not that bad. For a HD screen, it is bright and clear, with good colors and legible text. The only time you’ll see the difference between the two is if you put it side by side.

Processor

The OPPO F5 features an octa-core MediaTek MT6763T processor with 4GB of RAM. The Vivo V7+ is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 processor, paired with 4GB of RAM.

The F5 has the more powerful mid-range MediaTek processor, with an AnTuTu score of around 64k+. While the V7+’s Snapdragon 450 is mainly considered an entry level processor with an AnTuTu score of around 57K+.

Despite the difference in benchmark scores, both devices are fast and snappy, with little to no lags. In everyday use, both offer excellent user experience as well.

The higher processor on the F5 means it will open and load certain apps and games faster. It will be more future proof as well. On the other hand, the Snapdragon 450 is more efficient, can still play most games, and consumes less power.

Storage

The Vivo V7+ offers 64GB storage, while the OPPO F5 32GB. Both offer microSD card support up to 256GB. It looks like 32GB is the new normal, and to be honest, I think it’s more than enough for most people. But having double the size at 64GB does have its benefits, especially if you like storing a lot of photos, videos and music.

Front Camera

The OPPO F5, the latest Selfie Expert, comes with 20MP front camera with a f/2.0 lens and on-screen flash. But the Vivo V7+ offers a whopping 24MP front camera with a f/2.0 lens and a LED fill flash.

Both offer beautification modes, but the OPPO F5 ups the ante with AI technology powering its selfie enhancements.

Rear Camera

The Vivo V7+ comes with a 16MP rear camera with a f/2.0 lens, PDAF and a LED flash. The OPPO F5 also has a 16MP camera with a brighter f/1.8 lens, PDAF, and a LED flash.

Battery

The OPPO F5 has 3,200 mAh battery and comes with a charger with a higher voltage. The Vivo V7+ comes with a 3,225 mAh battery.

While the difference in capacities are small, the Vivo V7+ may come out with the longer run time. This is mainly because of two factors: the display and the processor. An HD display means the phone doesn’t need to push itself too much to render on a bigger screen (as opposed to a larger resolution full HD). The processor, the efficient Snapdragon 450, is more power efficient and is geared more toward conserving battery, while balancing performance.

Others Specs

Both handsets come with rear-mounted fingerprint sensors, and face unlock features.

The Vivo V7+ offers more when it comes to music and audio. The handset comes with an FM Radio (for free music listening), and more importantly, it comes with an AK4376A Hi Fidelity digital to analogue converter or DAC. This a huge difference, especially for music lovers. This means a better listening experience with more dynamic range and clarity.

To take full advantage of this though, you’ll need high quality content such as FLAC, WAV or other lossless formats, and a good set of earphones or speakers. But if you’re into music to begin with, chances are you already have one of those.

Price

Okay, so this part I suppose is where a dividing line will be drawn. The OPPO F5 is priced at PHP15,990, while the Vivo V7+ retails for PHP17,990. The 2k difference in price will be a deciding factor for some. But again, it all depends on what you’re looking for in a phone.

Final Thoughts

The OPPO F5 only launched a few days ago, and it looks like the smartphone is already making waves. The Vivo V7+ may have its disadvantages, but do not count out its other offerings as it also brings a lot of value. As always, the two handsets offer different things, and choosing between the two will depend on how you intend to use your device. Before you invest on either, be sure to do your research to see if they fit your needs.
